Nyack's
Library Grows
The Nyack Library is expanding to nearly double its present size.
At a festive reception last month, Nyack Library's Director,
James Mahoney, shared some details of the project.
Among improved
features will be a new Circulation Checkout Dept., many new books,
more audio/ visual materials, and a charming new children's library
with big windows open to nature. Upstairs, the entire floor will
be devoted to adult reading, learning and reference with views
of the Hudson River and even a small coffee bar. On the lower
level will be a new Computer Resource Center with Internet access,
audiovisual and graphics equipment. The new Community Room, designed
for meetings, will have space for 85 guests. The 'Teen Room will
provide a comfortable after-school environment for middle school
students.
"Not everything
will be new of course," said Mr. Mahoney, "we will
still maintain our exquisite Carnegie Room, entered off Broadway,
which is the reading room of choice for the community. Tell everyone,
we are definitely preserving the historic properties we own-the
Depew and Stevenson Houses."
Mr. Mahoney
added he expects the project to be complete in about 18 months.
Volunteer
Needs Help
From Steve Stoltze, of the Volunteer Ambulance Corps: "As
you may know, an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) from Regional
EMS, located in Nanuet, was involved in a serious motor vehicle
accident. Bonnie Ames, a volunteer EMT and firefighter, lost
her arm and sustained other traumatic injuries.
Bonnie has
a long road to recovery and we are hoping the public and all
emergency services, will help by making donations."

Nice
Neighbor
Last month, I was late getting back to my car after conducting
an interview at Didier's pastry shop and feared I might have
a ticket. I needn't have worried. Some nice neighbor with unexpired
time on his / her muni meter receipt stuck it under the windshield
wiper on my car. Thank you, nice neighbor! I now know what to
do with my receipts with unexpired time.

Trees In the News
Orangetown gets a new tree resolution-
Last month,
the Orangetown Board passed a resolution directing Orange &
Rockland Utilities to go a little easier on Township trees.
Neighbors in
and around Blauvelt expressed dismay about what they describe
as "scorched earth" tree-clearing by Orange & Rockland
Utilities. Charges are that, in its destruction of trees, the
utility far exceeds necessary steps to protect their power lines.
The Orangetown Board appears to agree.
In addition
to exercising better judgement in tree removal, the Township
wants to direct the utility to replant trees already lost and
to clear away the debris they create.
Orange &
Rockland maintains that their tree-destroying practices are mandated
by the PSC (Public Service Commission).
The measure
passed with 4 ayes: (Councilpersons Troy, Low-Hogan, Manning)
and
Supervisor Kleiner. Councilperson Maturo was absent.
Home
Repair Scams
It's Spring-the time for daffodils, cherry blossoms and home
repair scams.
Complaints
against home improvement contractors are among the most common
complaints consumer organizations and federal consumer agencies
receive. With over $200 billion spent in America each year, home
repairs and improvement make an attractive target for scammers.
According to
experts, the following phrases should raise the red flag in your
mind. Honest contractors never use them:
· "I
just happen to be working in your neigh-
borhood"
· "I have materials left over"
· "I need cash up front"
· "I have a special offer that's good today, only"
· "I can help you finance the project"
· "I want to use your home as a model"
Don't be pressured
into signing anything. Don't give anyone your Social Security
number. If it seems too good to be true-it is.
