Where did you grow up?
As a kid what did you want to be when you grew up?
“I wanted to be a musical comedy star.”
What is your education?
“A BS in education, speech, drama and English.”
What was your first job?
“Assistant copy writer on Memphis radio.”
Tell us about your career since then.
“Moving to New York City I first worked at a large publishing house then began singing; for many years I had a successful singing and recording career in New York. At one recording session, I met my husband Chuck, who is a sound engineer. Later, I became an executive at Eileen Fisher.”
How did you find your present career?
“For six years I worked for Eileen Fisher, first as her executive assistant, then as VP for buying. When buying jewelry, I spoke with many fine designers and I sometimes made suggestions about what would really work in our shops. One designer asked me to describe what I had in mind. I did and he said, ‘Saundra you know that idea is good. Really good. You are a jewelry designer!’
I was 49 with no idea how to make jewelry, so I just went ahead and designed jewelry. Five years later I had 250 shops around the world selling my jewelry. I was untrained but ‘taught and inspired by life!’
Why did you come to Nyack?
First Chuck, then I, decided to move out of New York City and find a more relaxing home. When we found Nyack with its interesting people and laid-back atmosphere, close enough to NYC to easily drive in, we moved. And are very happy we did.
What do you do to relax?
“We get in the car and explore. We drive to someplace unknown to us.”
What qualities do you admire in people?
“Honesty, directness, loyalty”
If you won the big lottery what would you do?
“Give half of it to my husband, Chuck. The the rest I would give away. I wouldn’t change a moment of my life.”
