Good news for a change:
Last July, Governor Cuomo signed a law to ban the sale of shark fins in New York State.
The bill will save an estimated 73 million sharks slaughtered every year through finning, the brutal practice of cutting the fins off of a shark and then throwing the living fish back into the water. Thus mutilated, it has no chance of survival. Shark fins are considered a Chinese delicacy used in shark fin soup. Not only is this process inhumane, it endangers shark populations and damages our ocean ecosystem by removing an important predator.
