Cheesecake, plain cheesecake, cherry cheesecake, chocolate chip cheesecake—I have always loved cheesecake.

When I was growing up in Brooklyn, the only dessert my family ever ordered was cheesecake. I have eaten cheesecake in places ranging from the long-gone Automat to classy, over-priced joints on Park Avenue, family-owned Italian restaurants in Brooklyn’s Sheepshead Bay and kosher dairy restaurants on the Lower East Side.

I recently ate a cheesecake that was as good or, in my opinion, better than most in New York City. As with many important occasions in my life, I remember the exact time and place when this great event happened: October 5, 2012 at two in the afternoon at the Westgate Restaurant at Best Western, right here in Nyack.

Lisa Dosch who, with her family, owns the Westgate, bakes what may well be the world’s best cheesecakes. This is not my opinion alone.

At the big 2012 New Jersey State fair, Lisa won first place in both the plain cheesecake and flavored cheesecake categories.

Her cakes are the very definition of a classic New York cheesecake: silky smooth and creamy, with a balance of light texture and rich, sweet flavor.

Do yourself a favor: Drop by the Best Western and have a slice of Lisa’s wonderful cheesecake. If you’re venturesome, you might try her Amaretto or crème de menthe but her plain cheesecake will delight your inner purist.
