From 1995 through 2002 pie-lovers in Nyack were treated to perfect homemade pies from The Pie Lady, Deborah Tyler, who made them fresh every day in her kitchen. A sign led to a pathway directly to her door.
Then, one sad day, she closed shop and moved upstate. As he was growing up, her son, Wil, loved the pies too, and remembered them fondly. After gaining experience working for a small business, and wanting to start something on his own, he asked his mom to teach him everything she knew about pie baking. She agreed and they established a partnership.
Deborah is in charge of the baking, the development of new recipes and menus, while Wil manages the business. He also gets his hands in the pie dough, along with the staff, as they follow Mom’s instructions.
The partnership reappeared on the scene as The Pie Lady and Son last year at the Nyack Farmer’s Market. Then they opened a retail shop in Upper Nyack last Fall. They completed their first winter in the store to rave reviews, and feel especially honored when other bakers purchase their pies.
This spring, look for strawberry-rhubarb, seasonal berry specialties, local peach pies in the summer and a full line of homemade cookies from Mom’s recipes including chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin and tender, flaky shortbread that resembles their piecrust.
