Over thirty years ago, Nyack resident Sam Weinreb began making tofu in his kitchen. He expanded it into a business he called Local Tofu. For decades, he supplied high quality organic tofu, soymilk, salads, veggie burgers and other tofu products to markets and eating places in NY City and throughout the Hudson Valley.

Now retired from commercial production, Sam offers his expertise to anyone who would like to learn to make tofu at home. Sam supplies the soybeans and equipment and, in 2 hours, you will have homemade tofu, soymilk, a recipe booklet and the knowledge to make these products in your own home. Sam can arrange workshops for individuals or small groups.

You may be wondering how soybeans become cakes of tofu. Sam will show you how the beans are cooked, pressed into milk and pulp, coagulated, made into squares and cooled.

Sam has many motives for passing on the craft of tofu-making: a healthier diet, environmental concerns and the promotion of sustainable communities. It’s also a wonderfully creative pursuit for a man who is also an artist.

To register for a workshop or for more information, contact Sam Weinreb at (845) 727-6393 or by e-mail at: samweinreb@aol.com

Don’t be surprised if you pick up some words of wisdom along with your fresh tofu from Sam the Tofu Man.
