The Post Office Muddle by Shel Haber

Sunday, January 1, 2012

The US Post Office should have a surplus of $1.5 billion today— not a deficit of $19.5 billion. This financial problem was not caused by the Post Office, but by a law passed by the Republican-led Congress, in the last days of 2006. The law that caused the deficit is the Postal Accountability Act of 2006. Under this law, the US Post Office is forced to pre-pay future health care benefit payments to retirees for the next 75 years—all in just 10 years. This bill will seriously harm tens of millions of Americans, senior...

Historic Comic Book Republished

Sunday, January 1, 2012

50 years ago the Fellowship of Reconciliation first published Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Story as a comic book, shortly after the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955 was concluded. The FOR published it in English and a short while later, in Spanish. Since then, it has been translated into Arabic, Vietnamese and Farsi, and used to further the ideas of nonviolent resistance to oppression espoused by Dr. King and the FOR. Recently. the comic book played a part in the Egyptian revolution when an Arabic translation...

How To Eat a Gingerbread Man

Sunday, January 1, 2012

How do you eat your gingerbread man?  Do you bite off his head first?   How you munch your gingerbread man may reflect elements of your personality. According to a study by Dr. Alan Hirsch, Neurological Director of the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago, “if you choose to bite the head first, you have a more aggressive personality, are an achievement-oriented natural leader who won’t take no for an answer. If the initial bite is the right hand, it reflects an individual who tends...

At the Movies by Ric Pantale

For the next few columns, I plan to write about films that were underrated or misunderstood when they first came out, starting with HEAVEN’S GATE (1980) How do you describe a film that is synonymous with box office bomb? Its director, Michael Cimino, had just finished his sensational Academy Award-laden film, The Deer Hunter. Heaven’s Gate cost 44 million dollars in 1980, roughly equivalent to 125 million in 2012 dollars. It grossed a mere 13 million, forever to be known... Read More

They got what?! by Donna Cox

Undoubtedly, the Internet has revolutionized real estate. Studies show more than 88% of buyers use the Internet as their primary source of information when buying a home. In fact, 45% of buyers indicate they first saw the home they ultimately purchased online—up from 36% in 2009. Less than 2% of buyers indicate they found the [...]

Post holiday cheer … in round, flat form “It’s … the … most de-press-ing time of the year!” That’s my own personal song for post-holidays, cold and dark January. Following, in alphabetical order, are some of my favorite movie antidepressants. They are available on DVD, and a lot better for me than medication. Little Miss [...]
